Alfred William Rich

Alfred William “Al” Rich, age 92, of Grants Pass, died peacefully Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at his home.

A viewing will be from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m., Sunday, February 14, 2010 at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors.

A funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, February 14, 2010 at Hull & Hull Chapel. Interment with military honors will follow at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens.

Al was born March 7, 1917 in Detroit, Michigan. In January 1935 he graduated from Cass High School in Detroit. On June 3, 1944 in Detroit he married Doris “Lucille” Johnson. After Al’s discharge from the United States Army in 1945, Al drove buses for DSR in Detroit until the family moved to Torrance, California where he owned and operated his own service company, Rich Washer Company. Once the family moved to Grants Pass in 1969, Al worked for Montgomery Ward’s service department where he was service manager at the time of his retirement.

After his retirement, Al volunteered for the Josephine County Sheriff’s Department at the Murphy Sub-station for 16 years and was recognized and honored for his many hours of volunteer service.

Al enjoyed camping, boating, and hunting in his early years and took up painting and volunteering after he retired. He loved holiday and family gatherings with his extended family.

Al is survived by five daughters, Sharyn McIntyre of Mexico, Sylvia Leonard of Las Vegas, Nevada, Susan Nevotti of Williams, Oregon, Shelly Knight of Grants Pass, Oregon, and Stacy Stricker of Beaverton, Oregon; nine grandchildren; and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille on July 17, 2009.
