Alfred "Al" William Kolander

March 1, 1924 — March 29, 2010

Alfred “Al” William Kolander, age 86, of Grants Pass, died Monday, March 29, 2010 at his home after a long illness.

At his request no funeral service will be held. Private interment will be at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are taking care of arrangements.

Al was born March 1, 1924 in Dexter, Michigan to Emil & Eva Kolander. He had a great childhood and joined the United States Navy during World War II. He was a signalman serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific “Theater”.

He married Mildred Carole Halberstadt of Urbana, Illinois on August 19, 1952. They had a wonderful 58 years together. They moved to Reedsport, Oregon around 1958 where he was a painting contractor for many years. They later moved onto Grants Pass where he continued his painting business.

Al enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing. In later years he enjoyed writing.

He had many special friends and neighbors. He was a very wonderful man with many special qualities and he was a loving husband and father.

In addition to his wife Carole, his survivors include a sister, Norma McAllister and nephew George of Dexter, Michigan; three sons, Danny and wife Micki of Kingman, Arizona, Kerry and wife Debbie of Reedsport, Oregon and Kevin and wife Terri of Erie, Colorado; seven grandchildren, Lance, Troy, Phillip, Sara, Crystal, Tyler and Alyssa; 3 great-grandchildren, Savannah, Samuel and Tatianna; and his devoted dog Fancy.

The family would like to thank Dr Robert Gentry, Lovejoy Hospice and the VA Administration for all of their help in caring for Al in the last year of his life. It is so appreciated.
