Deborah Newell

March 22, 1948 — February 20, 2018

Long time Illinois Valley resident Deborah Jon Newell died Feb. 20th in a car accident. She was born in Chicago March 22 1948 to John and Mary Ellen Newell. On Nov.1 1969 she married Gene Vogel. They moved to Selma in 1973 and lived in a tent while building their house. She worked for the U.S. Forest Service as a lookout and later at the import store Tierra del Sol which she and Gene owned. She later moved to Cave Junction. She was a deeply spiritual person and became part of the Oneness Movement. She enjoyed painting, gardening, traveling and going to the movies and to the ocean. She also enjoyed raising chickens and had a name for each chicken. She treasured spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include her life partner Gene Vogel, children Adam Vogel and Elizabeth Williams of Cave Junction, mother Mary Ellen Newell of Chicago, brothers Mark and John Newell of Chicago, sisters Diane Newell of Chicago and Sharon Breyer of San Francisco, seven grandchildren and her first great grandchild due in May. She will be deeply missed by all. A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 Sunday March 18th at St. Mathias Episcopal Church in Cave Junction. All are welcome.
